Every summer, thousands of people across the UK sit in airport departure lounges gripping the armrests before they've even boarded. Some avoid booking holidays altogether. Others go through with it but spend weeks dreading it beforehand and the flight home ruins the last few days of their trip before it's even landed.
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something important: fear of flying is not a personality trait. It's not who you are. And it doesn't have to be permanent.
I'm based in Newton Mearns, Glasgow, and over the summer months I see a real increase in people reaching out about fear of flying, some with holidays already booked, some who've been putting off booking for years. Whatever stage you're at, there is something that can help.
Why Do People Develop a Fear of Flying?
Fear of flying, known clinically as aviophobia, rarely comes from one single thing. For most people it's a combination of factors layered on top of each other:
Loss of control. For many people, the fear isn't really about the plane at all. It's about handing over all control to someone else. On the ground, if something feels wrong, you can act. In the air, you can't. That helplessness can trigger intense anxiety even in people who are otherwise very calm.
The unknown. Strange sounds, turbulence, the sensation of take-off and landing and if you don't understand what's happening, your brain fills in the gaps with worst-case scenarios. That's just what brains do when they feel unsafe.
A previous bad experience. A bumpy flight, a moment of panic, or even witnessing someone else's distress on a plane can be enough to plant a seed of fear that grows over time.
Generalised anxiety. For some people, flying is just one of several triggers. If anxiety is already part of your daily life, confined spaces and lack of control can amplify it quickly.
Something you've built up over time. Sometimes there's no obvious starting point and the fear has just gradually grown, fed by avoidance, until the idea of flying feels completely overwhelming.
How Avoiding Flying Makes Your Anxiety Worse
Here's the catch with fear of flying: the more you avoid it, the bigger it gets.
Every time you don't get on that plane, your brain receives a message that the fear was justified that you made the right call by staying home. It reinforces the belief that flying is genuinely dangerous for you, and the threshold for anxiety gets lower and lower.
This is why willpower alone rarely works. You can tell yourself the statistics. You can read about how safe flying is. You probably already know all of that. But knowing something rationally and feeling it in your nervous system are two completely different things and that's the gap that hypnotherapy and NLP are designed to bridge.
Can Hypnotherapy Cure Fear of Flying?
Hypnotherapy works at the level where your fear actually lives which is in the subconscious mind. This is the part of you that fires the alarm response before your rational brain has even had a chance to weigh in. It's fast, automatic, and completely outside your conscious control.
In a calm, focused hypnotherapy session, we work directly with that subconscious response. We can begin to reset the emotional and physical charge attached to flying, allowing a new, calmer association in its place.
Many clients are genuinely surprised by how quickly things can shift. The goal is to get you to the point where you can book a holiday, board a plane, and actually be present for the experience rather than white-knuckling your way through it.
How NLP Techniques Help You Overcome Fear of Flying
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is another powerful tool for phobias and fears and one that is often suitable for most clients that come to me. Another way to break the anxiety response to reset and allow you to build a different internal relationship with the experience of flying.
For some people, NLP alone is transformative. For others, combining it with hypnotherapy produces the most lasting results. We'll always discuss what feels right for you.
Holiday Anxiety: When It's Not Just About the Flight
Fear of flying often doesn't travel alone. Over the summer, I work with clients who are also managing:
Health anxiety - worrying about getting ill while abroad, far from their GP or familiar routines
Fear of sleeping in unfamiliar places - the anxiety of being in a strange bed in a strange place
Separation anxiety - particularly the worry of leaving family, or the very real distress of leaving beloved pets behind
General holiday anxiety - the sense that something is going to go wrong, that they don't deserve to enjoy it, or that the anticipation is worse than anything could be worth
If any of these resonate alongside your fear of flying, you're not alone and all of these are things we can work on together.
What to Expect From Hypnotherapy for Fear of Flying
When you come to see me at Gilia Practice, based within Illuminated Thinking at Mearns Castle Golf Academy, Waterfoot Road, Newton Mearns, Glasgow G77 5RR for in person sessions or online for those further afield, we start with a conversation about your specific experience of the fear. What does it feel like? When does it start? Is it weeks before, or only at the airport? What are the thoughts that go through your mind?
From there, we go straight into the work. Sessions are calm, focused, and tailored entirely to you. Most clients feel more relaxed afterwards, and the deeper shifts tend to settle over the following few days.
If you're very anxious about the process itself, don't worry. I'll make sure we plan a session that feels completely manageable for you. We start with a conversation and go from there.
Sessions are available in person in Newton Mearns and online across Scotland and the UK.
Fear of Flying FAQs
Can hypnotherapy cure a fear of flying? Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for helping fear of flying. Many people experience significant, lasting change often in just 1 or 2 sessions. The aim is to make flying feel manageable and calm, rather than something to dread or avoid.
How many sessions do I need before I can fly? This depends on the nature of your fear but most people see meaningful change in one or two sessions. Get in touch as soon as possible, even if your flight is coming up soon, there's likely still time to do something helpful.
Can I do hypnotherapy for fear of flying online? Yes, online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person for phobias and fears. If you're based anywhere in Scotland or the UK and can't travel to Newton Mearns, online sessions work beautifully.
What if I'm scared of being hypnotised as well as flying? For many people NLP is the more effective approach for fear of flying so we will discuss how your fear of flying presents and decide the best approach. If hypnotherapy is the right approach for you then please remember you are always in complete control during hypnotherapy. You can open your eyes, speak, or stop the session at any point. There's nothing to be afraid of.
Do you help with other holiday-related fears? Yes. I work with a range of fears and anxieties that come up around travel and holidays, including health anxiety abroad, fear of sleeping away from home, separation anxiety, and general holiday worry. Get in touch and we can talk about what's going on for you.
