If you've ever lain awake at 2am replaying a conversation from three days ago, catastrophising about something that hasn't happened yet, or found yourself exhausted by your own thoughts then this post is for you.
Overthinking is one of the most common things people come to me with, and yet it's rarely what they put as the reason in the contact sheet. They contact me about anxiety, or poor sleep, or feeling overwhelmed. But when we start talking, what's almost always underneath it is a mind that simply will not switch off.
What Is Overthinking and why can't I stop?
Overthinking isn't a flaw in your character. It's your brain trying to keep you safe.
When we experience stress, uncertainty, or something that feels unresolved, our minds go into a kind of problem-solving loop - scanning for threats, rehearsing conversations, running through worst-case scenarios. In small doses, this is actually useful. It's how we prepare, plan, and protect ourselves.
The problem is when that loop gets stuck. When your brain can't find the "off switch" and keeps circling the same thoughts on repeat, long after the situation has passed or the decision has been made. That's when overthinking stops being protective and starts being exhausting.
Signs You Are an Overthinker
You don't have to be lying awake every night to be an overthinker. Some of the signs are subtler:
You replay conversations and wonder if you said the wrong thing
You find it hard to make decisions because you're weighing up every possible outcome
You feel anxious about things that haven't happened yet and might never happen
You struggle to be present because part of your mind is always somewhere else
You feel mentally tired, even after a full night's sleep
You find it hard to relax or truly switch off, even during downtime
If you're nodding along to more than a couple of those, you're probably more familiar with the overthinking cycle than you'd like to be.
Why Can't I Stop Overthinking?
The thing about overthinking is the harder you try to stop it, the worse it tends to get. Telling yourself to "just relax" or "stop worrying" is a bit like telling someone with a broken leg to just walk it off.
Overthinking lives below the level of conscious thought. It's driven by patterns, beliefs, and responses that have been built up over time often without you even realising it. You can't simply think your way out of a thinking problem. What you need is to work at a deeper level.
That's where hypnotherapy and NLP come in.
Can Hypnotherapy and NLP Help with Overthinking?
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind. That's the part of you that runs your automatic responses, your habits, your deeply held beliefs about yourself and the world. It's where those looping thought patterns actually live.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) also works with the way you process and respond to your thoughts and experiences. It works with the patterns driving your overthinking and actively shifts them.
In a relaxed, focused state, we can begin to gently interrupt those patterns, introduce new ways of responding to stress and uncertainty, and essentially teach your mind a different way of processing. Rather than spiralling, it learns to settle.
Clients often tell me that after hypnotherapy they feel like the volume on their thoughts has been turned down to a manageable level. Things are quieter. Calmer.
Depending on how your overthinking presents we will do either hypnotherapy or NLP or a combination of both. We look at how the patterns are presenting for you and provide a bespoke treatment plan.
What to Expect from an Overthinking Therapy Session
When you get in touch, we start with a conversation. I want to understand what's going on for you specifically: what the overthinking sounds like, when it's at its worst, and what you'd like life to feel like instead.
From there, we decide whether you would prefer online sessions or in person sessions for those living around Glasgow. Then at your first session we go over the issue and then start the session with our chosen techniques. There's no lengthy discussion about the past. You don't even need to know why it happens or how it started.
Depending on the techniques used you may notice the effects immediately. For others it may take a few days.
Sessions are available both in person in Newton Mearns and online across Scotland and the UK, whichever feels right for you.
Overthinking FAQs
Can hypnotherapy and NLP really stop overthinking? Yes - hypnotherapy and NLP are particularly effective for overthinking because it works at the subconscious level where those thought patterns are rooted. Rather than trying to logic your way out of the loop, hypnotherapy and NLP help your mind learn a different response from the inside out.
How many sessions will I need for overthinking? This varies from person to person, but many clients notice meaningful change within just 2/3 sessions. We'll discuss your individual situation and what a realistic plan might look like during your free consultation.
Is NLP better than hypnotherapy for overthinking? Neither is categorically better they complement each other and both access the subconscious to shift deep patterns. It all depends on how the overthinking presents for you.
