The subconscious mind stores that experience as something to avoid. When a similar situation appears again, the mind automatically starts the same reaction in an attempt to protect you.

Over time this response can repeat until the anxious pattern feels automatic.

The encouraging thing is that anxiety is often a learned response and learned responses can change.
