Can Hypnotherapy help me with anxiety?

If you're reading this, chances are anxiety has been an unwelcome companion in your life for a while. Maybe for years. Perhaps you've tried talking therapies, medication, or self-help books. Maybe you've Googled yourself into a rabbit hole at 2am looking for something that might actually work. And now you've landed on hypnotherapy and you're wondering is this the real deal, or is it just someone swinging a pocket watch and telling me I'm feeling very sleepy.

What Actually Happens When You’re Anxious?

Before we talk about hypnotherapy, it helps to understand what's really going on when anxiety takes hold.

Your subconscious mind is not your enemy. It's actually trying to protect you. It learned somewhere along the way that certain situations, places, thoughts or feelings were dangerous, and it developed a strategy to keep you safe. That strategy is anxiety. The racing heart. The avoidance. The dread.

The problem isn't that your subconscious is broken. The problem is that it learned the wrong strategy, and nobody has ever shown it a better way.

That's exactly what hypnotherapy does.

A Moment That Changed Everything for Me

And so, although I haven't suffered from anxiety personally, I have seen the difference hypnotherapy can make to those with anxiety, even those in their thirties, forties, fifties and more who have been living with anxiety since they were a teenager. Years and years of it. In fact, my first time witnessing just how impactful hypnotherapy could be for anxiety was when my trainer hypnotised someone and the next day, it was like a completely different person walked into the room. Not just in how they looked, but in how they carried themselves, how they spoke, how they were. And in the days that followed and even to this present day, they confirmed just how much better they felt.

That moment is why I do this work. Because years of suffering doesn't have to be the only story.

So What Makes Hypnotherapy Different?

Some people who come to me have already tried something - CBT, counselling, medication, mindfulness. And those things can absolutely have value. But here's what makes hypnotherapy genuinely different:

You don't have to talk about it in detail.

You don't need to dissect your childhood, recount every panic attack, or explain exactly why certain things trigger you. In fact, you don't even need to know why you get anxious. Many people don't. And with hypnotherapy, that doesn't matter.

You don't have to relive the feelings.

One of the biggest barriers to traditional therapy for anxious people is the idea of sitting in a room and feeling anxious all over again while you talk through it. With hypnotherapy, we bypass that entirely.

Results can come quickly.

We're not talking years of weekly sessions. Some people feel a significant shift after just one session. That's not a promise, but it is genuinely possible and it's something traditional therapies rarely offer.

"Can anyone be hypnotised?”

Let me bust a few myths:

"I'll lose control." You are aware throughout the entire session. You can hear me talking. You know where you are and you could stop at any point. Hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed state. It's a way of communicating with your subconscious mind, not a way of taking over it.

"It's weird or woo-woo." I understand why it feels that way. Stage hypnosis has a lot to answer for! But what I do is nothing like that. There's no making you do embarrassing things, no planting strange suggestions. We're working with your mind to help it find healthier, calmer ways to respond to the world.

"It won't work on me." This one's common, and the honest answer is that a relaxed, open state does help the process. But here's something fascinating. Many of my clients don't even fully notice the change at first. It's so natural, so organic, that they just quietly start doing things differently. The anxiety that used to be there simply... isn't. Like they've forgotten the problem ever existed. That's how gentle and natural the change can feel.

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

Everything I do is online, which most people end up loving'. You’re in your own home, you're comfortable, and you don't have to worry about driving anywhere afterwards.

Here's how it works:

Step 1: A free discovery call. Before anything else, we have a conversation. I want to make sure we're the right fit for each other, understand what you'd like to work on, and give you the chance to ask me anything. There's no pressure and no commitment. During this session we’ll also chat about how to set up for the online hypnotherapy session.

Step 2: Your session. During your online hypnotherapy session, you'll be on camera sitting comfortably in a chair with your head supported. You close your eyes. I guide you into a deeply relaxed state and take you through a session that is completely tailored to you and what you're working through. At the end, you open your eyes. That's it. Simple, calm, and done from the comfort of your own home.

Each session is built around your specific issue. That personalisation matters.

How Many Sessions Will I Need and What Does It Cost?

Our package is £297 and covers 3 sessions to work on the thing you wish to sort.

Most people find that 2–3 sessions is enough to see meaningful change, though everyone is different. If for any reason more sessions were needed beyond the package, we'll discuss that together.

You can see full details of my packages on my Services and packages page.

Is Hypnotherapy Right for Everyone With Anxiety?

I believe hypnotherapy can help with a wide range of anxiety - social anxiety, generalised anxiety, specific fears and phobias, anxiety around travel, driving, health, relationships and more. If you're unsure whether your particular experience of anxiety is something I can help with, the discovery call is the perfect place to ask.

“I had a NLP and Hypnotherapy session with Gillian to help me with my Health Anxiety, and oh my goodness what wonderful results. Gillian was the most understanding and compassionate therapist. My health anxiety has almost gone entirely, I feel relaxed ahead of my hospital investigations…”

If you're currently under the care of a doctor or mental health professional for a serious condition, it's always worth letting them know you're exploring hypnotherapy too.

What is the cost of anxiety?

Before I close, I want to ask you something.

How much has anxiety already cost you?

Not just money, though perhaps you've spent plenty on therapies and treatments that helped a little, or not at all. But think about what you've missed. The holidays you've avoided or not enjoyed. The opportunities you've turned down. The version of life that's felt just out of reach because anxiety was in the way.

What would it mean to get that back?

Investing in yourself through hypnotherapy isn't just about feeling calmer. It's about opening doors to a richer, fuller life. One where anxiety no longer gets the deciding vote.
